For 40 years, Fayette Senior Services’ mission has been to make a meaningful
difference in the emotional, social, and physical well-being of older adults, preserving their independence, improving their quality of life, and connecting them to the community. For 40 years, Fayette Senior Services has strived to meet this each and every day, especially during the holiday season. During this time that so many of us associate with family, exchanging gifts, and excitement, others don’t have the opportunity to celebrate. Keeping seniors, specifically homebound seniors, engaged and feeling appreciated is a top priority for us.
For the past 8 years, FSS has participated in Home Instead’s Be A Santa to a Senior (BASTAS) program. Each year, Home Instead Senior Care partners with FSS to identify seniors who might not otherwise receive gifts for the holiday season. With the help of the local community and organizations, FSS facilitates the distribution of gifts donated, surrounding everyone with love. Each senior’s gift request is written on an ornament and placed on holiday trees throughout the community. Many of FSS’ clients participate as those receiving gifts and are always so grateful that Santa made a visit to them!
It may not be your ideal holiday celebration, but to these seniors it’s more than just the gift they may be receiving. It provides them a sense of comfort that others are thinking about them during the holidays! Iris Harris, FSS Case Manager shares the goal behind this generous project: “The purpose of BASTAS is to spread holiday cheer to seniors who are financially challenged, shut in, or lonely and who might otherwise not have any gifts this holiday season.” It’s that time of year again, time for the Christmas trees to go up, filled with BASTAS ornaments indicating needed presents and the cheer to be spread. Help spread holiday cheer this season by choosing an ornament off a tree and giving back to those in need! It truly is the warmth of our neighbors that makes all the difference, and it’s time we show our senior community how much they are cherished!
