VOLUNTEERING
Delivery volunteers are the heart and soul of our Meals On Wheels program providing our clients with food and friendship. Each year they deliver over 40,000 nutritious meals to homebound seniors throughout Fayette County.
PERMANENT DRIVERS
Volunteers are needed for our weekly and daily routes. Our weekly route clients receive 5 meals on one day. Weekly route volunteers deliver meals Tuesdays through Fridays, from approximately 9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will have multiple coolers. Daily route clients receive a meal every day, Monday through Friday. Daily route volunteers deliver meals Mondays through Fridays, from approximately 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Depending on your schedule and your personal preferences of service, you may volunteer once a week, once a month, or whenever your schedule permits. Volunteers use their own car and gas to deliver meals. The average route has 5 to 6 stops and takes approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours to complete.
SUBSTITUTE DRIVERS
Being a Meals On Wheels substitute driver is ideal for people who are unable to commit to a regular schedule with specific days. Substitute drivers are called to fill in on routes that become open due to permanent driver cancellations.
ROUTE TEAMS
Route teams are a great way for businesses, church groups, community organizations, or just a group of friends to get involved. Teams can take on a certain route on a particular day of the week and then share that route among team members. Depending on the number of team members, each team member may only deliver once a month or once every other month.
As with all our volunteers, our Meals On Wheels drivers are asked to submit an application, complete a background/ driver’s record check, provide two personal references, and complete a training/orientation program.
If you have any questions about being a Meals On Wheels volunteer contact Ginnie Plunkett at 770-461-0813, ext. 127.
