It’s hard to imagine that so many seniors in Fayette County are not only going hungry simply because they have difficulty preparing a meal, but also do not have any type of holiday meal that many of us take for granted. Fayette County has a large number of seniors that live alone and are battling health conditions and limited fixed incomes that make the simple tasks of preparing a nutritious meal a great challenge. For more than 40 years, Fayette Senior Services’ Meals On Wheels program has been delivering a difference for so many in our community. It has ensured that no senior in Fayette County goes hungry or is without the ability to have proper nutrition. Each year, a team of dedicated volunteers deliver over 56,000 meals to more than 300 homebound and semi-homebound older adults who reside throughout Fayette County.
In addition to providing meals for clients during the regular week, it was discovered that many didn’t have family close by or the means to obtain healthy meals during the days that FSS was closed for holidays throughout the year. With this knowledge, we quickly stepped up to meet a challenge – we would begin a fundraiser to help raise additional funds to cover holiday meal costs for those in need. With this, Project Love was born! With the general funding FSS receives annually for its Meals On Wheels program only covering the cost of weekday non-holiday meals, we took action to raise funds for deprived seniors through our annual Project Love Holiday Meal Campaign. With support from both residents and the business community, hundreds of seniors will experience the love our community offers as well as the comfort and joy of having a nutritious meal during the holidays. Fayette Senior Services’ President and CEO Nancy Meaders is always impressed by the constant support of this invaluable service. “I am continually amazed at the long-time outpouring of community support that FSS has received for our Meals on Wheels program and Project Love campaign. We are blessed to live in such a caring community that always steps up to ensure that seniors who are food insecure have meals throughout the holiday seasons and beyond,” expressed Meaders.
